Mapping Human Agency in the AR-Enabled Co-Production of an Urban Community Podium

Published and Presented at the ACSA 113th Annual Meeting in New Orleans

Hi-DARS Lab and AHU_Lab presented their collaborative research on augmented reality-enabled co-production methods at the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) 113th Annual Meeting, held March 20–22, 2025, in New Orleans under the theme REPAIR.

The peer-reviewed paper, titled: “Mapping Human Agency in the AR-Enabled Co-Production of an Urban Community Podium”, is published in the conference proceedings and presented by Associate Professor Dr. Sina Mostafavi, Ph.D. student Bahar Bagheri, and Assistant Professor Dr. Asma Mehan.

Papeer Overview:

This paper introduces an AR-enabled “phygital” framework that integrates augmented reality with timber dowel structures to engage non-expert community members in the co-design and co-assembly of an urban food podium.

Developed within a graduate-level design-build course and publicly demonstrated, the system merges robotic fabrication, voxel-based joinery, and AR-assisted assembly to enable collaborative, step-by-step construction by both experts and non-experts.

The project explores how augmented fabrication can enhance human agency, foster community participation, and support resource-driven urban interventions.
